Mid-October Weekend Research
Weekend Swing Trade Radar: Rotation, Oil Strength, and Illustrative Setups in BB, CRBG, CRCT, and FTRE
October 17, 2026
The week of October 12–16 showed a clear rotation. The Dow finished modestly higher while the Nasdaq Composite fell roughly 4.5% and the Nasdaq 100 dropped about 5.5% (its worst weekly decline since April 2025 and roughly 7% off the recent high). The S&P 500 lost nearly 2%. VIX rose toward 20. Technology, particularly semiconductors, led the downside. Energy, consumer staples, health care, and materials showed relative strength.
Hot September inflation (CPI at 3.7% YoY and a much hotter PPI) combined with an oil surge (WTI near $101, Brent near or above $110 on Hormuz, Houthi, and Ukraine-Russia energy risks) kept rate-hike discussion alive. October odds faded after non-committal commentary, but December remains more elevated. AI infrastructure return and credit concerns added pressure on the higher-beta complex.
For traders who favor multi-day to multi-week swings with asymmetrical risk-to-reward, tight invalidation, and technical structure (50/200 SMA, RSI in neutral ranges, ATR roughly 3–6%, Fibonacci targets, breakouts, pullbacks, or consolidations), the tape is more selective. Relative strength in energy and certain financials is constructive. Sharp pullbacks in semiconductors and software infrastructure can create mean-reversion or retest candidates if structure holds and volume confirms.
Illustrative examples of the approach (as of the October 16 close)
These are recent scanner or structure examples that fit the style of defined risk and measured-move potential. They are not recommendations. Links go to TradingView charts for your own review.
- NYSE:BB (BlackBerry): Closed near $8.06 after a volatile week. Earlier discussions highlighted an early accumulation or long-swing structure with a tight invalidation (risk on the order of under $0.10 per share or roughly 1%) relative to multi-point upside targets. The asymmetrical profile depends on price holding recent support and reclaiming structure. Volume has been elevated on down days; a hold above the most recent swing low with RSI stabilizing would keep the measured-move idea intact. Position size must keep any stop-out small relative to account capital.
- NYSE:CRBG (Corebridge Financial): Closed near $34.43, consolidating in a range roughly $32.30–$35.64 and holding above the 50-day SMA (near $33.80–$34.10) and well above the 200-day. RSI sits in a neutral zone. Analyst targets cluster higher (mid-to-high $30s to around $40). This is a classic range or potential breakout-at-resistance setup. A clean hold of the range or a measured push through the recent high with tight invalidation below the range low or 50-day area fits the preferred risk definition. Relative strength versus the broader indices during the week’s rotation is a constructive note.
- NASDAQ:CRCT (Cricut): Traded near $6.45–$6.70 and tested the 52-week high area around $6.82 earlier in the week. Low float and modest dividend are part of the profile. Earnings are expected in early November. Pre-earnings maps of this type require extra respect for implied moves and gap risk. Scenarios depend on volume expansion and whether price can hold the recent consolidation. Any plan needs a clearly defined invalidation and small position size given the proximity to highs and the upcoming catalyst.
- NASDAQ:FTRE (Fortrea Holdings): Closed near $22.50 after recent momentum. Earlier quantitative alerts referenced a momentum breakout structure with Fibonacci targets above the $25–$27 area and a defined stop. The stock remains below its recent high near $23.51. A retest of the breakout zone or hold of the most recent swing low with ATR still elevated enough for a multi-day swing keeps the measured-move idea relevant. Confirmation on volume is required; the healthcare/contract-research backdrop has been mixed.
Broader radar for the week of October 19–23
Energy and shipping/tanker names continue to benefit from the oil backdrop. Pullbacks into support or clean consolidations with ATR in the preferred range and tight stops remain higher-probability than chasing extended leaders. Semiconductors and software infrastructure offer potential rebound candidates only where structure (moving averages, RSI returning toward neutral) and volume align. Financials that held relative strength can still produce range or early-breakout edges.
Key catalysts include Netflix (Tuesday), Meta and Tesla (Wednesday), plus housing starts, jobless claims, and consumer sentiment. Oil and geopolitical headlines can still override technical levels quickly. Elevated VIX increases gap risk on low-float or micro-cap names; those remain higher-risk and require the smallest position sizes.
The environment currently favors selectivity on energy and certain financials, plus patience on higher-beta technology names that may offer cleaner entries after further consolidation. Nothing is forced. Clean structure and small, predefined risk come first.
