Nature's Weirdest Family Tree

The Bee That Has No Dad
(But Has a Grandfather)

Unraveling the ultimate biological mind-bender

Family trees can get pretty messy, but the honeybee family tree takes the crown for pure biological absurdity.

“I don't have a dad, and I can never have a son.”

“But I have a grandfather, and I'll definitely have grandsons.”

You'd probably think anyone saying that had lost their mind. But for a male honeybee—known as a drone—this is just standard biology.

It all comes down to a fascinating genetic system called haplodiploidy.

Here's how the biological puzzle works:

  • No Father: Female bees develop from fertilized eggs, receiving genetic material from both their mother and father. Male drones, however, develop from unfertilized eggs. A drone therefore gets his entire set of chromosomes from his mother, the queen. No dad required.
  • No Sons: When a drone mates with a queen, his sperm can fertilize her eggs. Fertilized eggs develop into females, while unfertilized eggs develop into males. So a male honeybee can father daughters—but not sons.
  • Has a Grandfather: Here's where it gets really strange. The drone has no father, but his mother—the queen—did have a father. That male is therefore the drone's maternal grandfather.
  • Has Grandsons: The drone can father daughters. If one of those daughters eventually becomes a queen, she can lay unfertilized eggs of her own. Those eggs develop into male drones—making them the original drone's grandsons.
