Hurry Up and Wait
The Siren Song of the Perfect Story (And Why I Didn't Buy)
We’ve all been there. You read a thesis, listen to a podcast, or scan a research report, and the narrative is so compelling it feels like a surefire win. The logic is airtight, the macro trends are undeniable, and the FOMO starts creeping in.
But a great story doesn’t always equal a great trade right now.
I recently faced this exact dilemma, and it served as a perfect reminder of why we need objective systems to protect us from our own enthusiasm.
The Experiment
I recently came across a list of stocks being presented as some of the most compelling, high-upside opportunities in the market today.
The list included: SERV, RCAT, SATL, IONQ, XPO, HPE, FCX, OUST, LWLG, and PLTR.
On paper, the stories were fantastic. AI, robotics, quantum computing, defense technology, logistics infrastructure. If someone asked me which secular themes could dominate the next decade, many of these sectors would top the list.
So, I did what I've been training myself to do: I ignored the stories and opened the charts.
What I Expected
I expected at least a few of them to be flashing clear, green buy signals. After all, if these are truly some of the best opportunities available in the current market, shouldn't institutional money already be moving in? Shouldn't the charts be reflecting that strength?
What I Found
Instead, my trend-following system was still showing red on nearly everything I checked.
To be clear:
- This doesn't mean the companies are bad.
- This doesn't mean the long-term stories are wrong.
- This doesn't mean they won't eventually skyrocket.
It simply means my system hasn't received confirmation yet. Here is a snapshot of what I saw when I looked under the hood:
| Ticker | Theme | Story | System Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| SERV | Robotics / AI Delivery | Compelling | Not Yet |
| RCAT | Defense Drones | Compelling | Not Yet |
| SATL | Satellite Imagery | Compelling | Not Yet |
| IONQ | Quantum Computing | Compelling | Not Yet |
| XPO | Logistics | Closest To Bullish | Watching |
| HPE | Tech Infrastructure | Solid | Waiting |
| FCX | Copper / Electrification | Macro Tailwind | Not Yet |
| OUST | Lidar Technology | Compelling | Not Yet |
| LWLG | Electro-Optics | High Potential | Waiting |
| PLTR | AI / Enterprise Data | Strong Narrative | Waiting |
The Broader Lesson: Narrative vs. Confirmation
And that’s where things get interesting.
As traders and investors, we are constantly bombarded by narratives. Human brains are hardwired to love stories. It is incredibly easy to buy into a "world-changing technology" and assume the stock price must go up immediately.
But the market doesn't care about a good story until the big money starts buying it.
Sitting on your hands when a story sounds perfect is one of the hardest skills to master. It feels like you're missing out. But my system is designed to keep me out of structural downtrends and choppy, sideways mud.
By forcing myself to wait for price confirmation, I lose nothing but a bit of upside at the absolute bottom—in exchange for avoiding the pain of holding a stock that continues to bleed lower for months.
Until then, I wait.
